Night Vision

I couldn’t see you

in the dark,

the sunrise, the sunset,

both cast shadows

that could have been anyone,

silhouettes in front of

the earth’s great lantern,

it could have been

an unknown player in a play

about the heart,

a member of the chorus

chiding me about looking

directly at the sun

and not looking where it mattered,

but I saw you in the plain,

clear light of day

and under the glow

of the moon

and it was you

all along–

it felt foolish when

it dawned on me,

why couldn’t I see it before?
