The Short Life of Death

Pyres set aflame with

products of the earth

to return the dust to dust

as the ground,

watered by the blood, sweat, and tears

of the many generations

screams dirges

for those still between

the dirt and the sky,

between the expanse of land and water,

between heaven and hell,

life and death–

but Death still smiles,

attempting to hold on

to what is not his,

an idea gripped firmly in his hands

like water
